Dancing Towards Peace: The Montessori Perspective

Kei Ikeda, Kasia Ustowska-Gmerek

Description

Dr. Montessori was convinced that establishing peace is the work of education. In this session we will share our perspective on dance as a foundation for peace. We’ll highlight its potential to forge connections, foster understanding beyond language barriers, nurture empathy, relationships and enable self expression through creative movement in a way that is aligned with the Montessori principles. Referencing Anna Halprin’s approach, which centers on the transformative aspects of dance that engage physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual awareness, we’ll explore how it provides opportunities for self-exploration and promotes understanding of others. We’ll delve into how to incorporate dance as one of the methods for building peace. Additionally, we’ll explore strategies for creating respectful, inclusive environments where children can express themselves through movement, individually together.
